1st annual Muley Point overnight camping,
Sunday, April 25 & 26, 2004.

Utah via CO 141 from Whitewater to Uravan. West up the Dolores River by graded gravel road to Bedrock, CO in Paradox Valley. On to Lasal Junction in Utah via CO 90/UT46, then south to Monticello, Blanding and Bluff towards Mexican Hat on first US 191 then US 163 with a trip by graded road through Valley of the Gods.

The Valley of the Gods road ends near the base of Moki Dugway, a 1000 feet rise, 10% steep climb up a switchback gravel road to the top of Cedar Mesa where an unmarked graded dirt road leads to Muley Point -- 1000 feet above the valley below, another 1000 feet above the bottom of the San Juan River Canyon. There was no one at the first good view place in the Muley Point area when I arrived. There is no campground at Muley Point. At present, it is just BLM land with plenty of nice slickrock at the mesa edge. I picked a choice camp spot and, after an hour or so, was enjoying a glass of wine when an eight vehicle parade arrived. These people began milling around looking for a good place to camp. I finished my wine, put my glass away and walked over to the nearest member of the parade group. "I'm about to move on to the next point," I explained. "You are welcome to this camp spot." "There's another point?" he asked. A small group quickly gathered to discuss this "other point." There was no agreement so I suggested they enjoy their camp spot an said I was moving on. Just as I finished re-packing, a guy came over and said, "Our leader has found a spot over there [back in the trees]. You won't have to move." "Thanks," I said, "but I'm already packed." And so I moved.

My new camp spot, which I believe to actually be Muley Point, was great and I had it all to myself for the duration of my visit. I camped close to the edge of the mesa and had a great view from southeast to northwest. A self-heating meal of Rotini Bolognese with more wine made it a perfect evening. I slept on the slickrock, sans tent, and thoroughly enjoyed the night with modest moon but brilliant starlight.
