Buzzard Divide, Overland Mountain RoadHeading east out of Collbran, CO on CO330, continue on, past the turn off to Vega Reservoir and on to 71 4/10 Road. Two or three miles along 71 4/10 Road, a sign announces a turn to the left for Buzzard Divide, Paonia and CO133. From there, follow the signs or consult a map. Following main roads is rather easy with choices being mostly Paonia to the south or CO133 at the west base of McClure Pass.Buzzard Divide road, not long ago, was mostly 2-track dirt at the higher elevations and one of my favorite remote-area roads. No more. This road, although still mostly single lane, is now all graded, graveled, smoothed and apparently a favorite of big motorhomes and giant pickups pulling fifth-wheel trailers. The dust can be terrible even on a week day. I can only imagine what it would be like on a weekend. It's pretty country, though. The road to Paonia, be it Overland Road, Stevens Gulch or whatever, is even better, smoother, wider, fresher gravel. The scenery is pretty, the road fun to ride. You could now ride these roads on a cruiser if you don't mind dust. |
