Black Ridge Road
May 17, 2010.
Black Ridge Road is one of many side roads from Inspiration Loop. From the junction of Fruitland Mesa Rd and Allen Ranch Rd, go west on Allen Ranch Rd .8 mile. Turn south on 3350 Rd for .8 mile. Turn west on B50 Rd for 1 mile. Turn left onto Black Ridge RD and follow it 7.3 miles to the Gunnison River ovelook.

This Bing Map link should reproduce a zoomable, full-sized version of the small, clickable route map on the right (give it a few seconds to convert route coordinates to graphics).

Another Map highlights only the road named Black Ridge Road and gives an enhanced image of the topography.

This 7.3 mile primitive 2-track Black Ridge Road was easy to ride, the badly rutted first mile being the trickiest part. Rocks I had anticipated near the canyon rim were not a problem. There were more ups and down, twists and turns than I expected but that made it interesting. The end of the road overlooking the Gunnison river far below was stunning, all the more satisfactory for it's isolation and loneliness. My photographs are a disappointment, seeming far less impressive than reality. In truth, there are prettier spots on Highway 92 near Black Mesa and the awesome north rim of the Black Canyon isn't many miles away but that's not the point. We buy adventure bikes to find the less visited places and arrival is our reward.

Black Ridge Rd begins in a wooded area...   skirts the rim of a canyon I haven't visited...   but I see another road down there...   opens out onto expansive high meadows...
finally terminating high above the Gunnison River.   A great spot to eat lunch.   Tranquility.   And yet another road less traveled.
I know, my photographs don't show the ruts, the rocks or the ups downs twists and turns. I only stop on the good spots.
