Baker's Dozen
Thirteen Unpaved Western Colorado Mountain Passes in One Day

For a few years, I led a 9-unpaved-passes-in-one-day ride. The first couple years I rode alone but after that I was usually joined by one or more riders on big dual sports or adventure-touring motorcycles. One of the most consistent and enthusiastic of these riders was Billy Aller, a rider of many talents and a Big Dog Rally veteran. My age and circumstances made it advisable to turn this recurring ride over to a younger leader. Billy was the obvious choice. While age and bone-density problems had kept my route on easy, 2WD unpaved passes, Billy had no need for restraint. His first planned route dropped a couple 2WD passes and added 6 4WD passes. Now the ride was 13 unpaved passes in one day with 6 of them 4WD. I rode the 7 easy passes in 2008 but declined to attempt the 4WD passes. That will likely be my last participation. The 2009 ride didn't happen for various reasons. I did not participate in 2010. Long live the Baker's Dozen!
